Despite all the unnecessary deaths on both sides of the conflict, approaching 1 million dead and wounded, all attributable to Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine 2-years ago, the Russian leader's failure to achieve his objective in Ukraine is destroying his reputation and has bruised his ego in the process.
And now, because Ukraine’s new F-16 fighter jets, along with new funding from the US, will help to create a no-fly zone over Ukraine in order to prevent more innocent civilian deaths, Putin is threatening nuclear war. It’s as if Putin thinks anyone who opposes his war in Ukraine is such a grave threat to Russia that he must use weapons of mass destruction.
All the West wants is for Russia to get out of Ukraine.
How is helping to defend Ukrainian civilians such a grave threat to Russia that their leader feels the necessity to threaten nuclear war? The answer is that the West isn’t a military threat. NATO only exists to counter Russian aggression. As the war barrels along however, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Putin is at his wits end. Because to make such a grave threat based on limited action, he must be rattled and nearing desperation.
Despite the rhetoric he must also know any use of nuclear weapons, whether tactical or strategic, by Russia or any other country, will receive an immediate response from NATO, in particular the United States.
What goes around comes around in this world. Don’t talk about nuclear war unless you are prepared to defend against it. Given Russia can’t stop Ukrainian drones hitting targets hundreds of miles deep inside their country, it’s unlikely they could defend against a massive nuclear missile attack.
So Vlad, best to keep quiet and consider retiring. The world will be a safer place when you do.
