Seeking your support in my research of Canada's patent competitive intelligence (CI) in the US market

From Statistics Canada's 2011 foreign trade data, Canada had a $7 Billion of export deficit in the "Charges for the use of intellectual property" ($2.5 billions of them were in patent and industrial design licensing), accounted for 14.4% of the total Canada's foreign trade deficit. The US market accounted for 89.9% of the Canadian export deficits in the "Patent and Industrial Design" licensing Therefore, intellectual properties, especially patents, have huge impact to Canada's foreign trade. In order to improve Canadian competitive advantages in the US market and reduce the trade deficit in the "Charges for the use of patent", we need a watchdog mechanism to continuously track the latest US patent intelligence of Canada and Canada's competitors.

To whom it may concern,

I am seeking your generous support on my research of Canada’s patent competitive intelligence (CI) in the US market. CI is a kind of SWOT analysis that tracks the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats from inside and outside a corporation for strategic decision making. Patent CI is a SWOT from patent point of view.

Intellectual Property right (IPR), especially patent, is a critical trade issue in public sector, as well as a core enterprise market advantage. This is particular important for small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs), a great Canadian economy contributor, to compete with much larger companies in today's global competition. The US market is Canada's largest export market and a major patent market in the world, with $21 billion of foreign trade surplus in patent licensing in 2011. It is vital to study the US market competition by patent.

In 2009, I built a database of US patent holders in Canada to track the latest patent CI of over 4600 Canadian US patent holders in all business sectors throughout Canada, on a weekly basis since then. This database has the information about who they are, where they are, what they have patented in the US market and the trends of their US patent holdings.

With this database, I completed pioneer research projects in using patent CI to support socio-economic policy/decision making for the government of the Region of Peel. I proposed and validated an initiative of patent-based employment match and adapted patent CI into job market information. I also completed the "Peel's Patent Landscape in the US Market" to represent Peel region’s economic strength. The feedback of the senior management of the internal/external stakeholders of the Region of Peel said that my work can benefit multiple economic issues, such as business-to-business partnership building, investment evaluation, economic development planning, education, etc. On March 3, 2012, the Region of Peel sponsored me to present my work at Region of Peel at the 14th National Metropolis Conference, Toronto.

I would like to seek more applications of this directory of Canada's companies with patent advantages in the US market, and the sponsorship to extend this work into a watchdog mechanism to provide evidences for strategic decision making support.
