Ottawa Redblacks – How can they stop Drew Willy and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers?

July 3, 2014

Drew Willy’s debut as the starting QB in Winnipeg Friday night was filled with highlight reel passes and what finished as a statistical gem. (19/27 308 YDS) Watching the Toronto Argonauts get trounced by the Bombers has some Redblacks fans wondering what it will take to stifle the potent offense.

Ottawa Redblacks Defense will Need to Shine

The Ottawa Redblacks will need to disrupt any rhythm Willy has with WR Aaron Kelly who connected early and often for two touchdowns in the first quarter. Winnipeg Blue Bombers found the endzone 4 times with passes in the first half alone against Toronto. The Bombers then took their foot off the gas a bit running the ball and allowing their Winnipeg Defense to clean up the rest of the game.

Ottawa Redblacks have to keep Nic Grimbsy from running out of the back field for big gains like he was Friday night against Toronto. This could be a big test for the Redblacks on defense as Jovon Johnson and veteran TJ Hill will need to step up and make some plays early and often.

The Blue Bombers had defenders getting into the lanes and disrupting Ricky Ray and his ability to find receivers. Watching the Argos QB being flushed from the pocket a few times by the smothering Bombers defense should have caught the eye of Henry Burris and the staff. Ottawa Redblacks QB Henry Burris and the Offensive line will need to be quick at getting the ball to open wide receivers.

BleedRedblacks podcast hosts will be excited to watch the regular season debut of the Ottawa Redblacks in Winnipeg Thursday night. That game will be aired 8:30 EST on TSN and should offer an early view of what to expect from this expansion team.
