Ottawa Citizen advertising of assault rifles

March 7, 2018

An Ottawa Citizen advertising flyer that contained ads for assault type rifles infuriated me.

I was shocked and disturbed to open the advertising flyers in this morning's Ottawa Citizen [Wednesday Feb. 28] to find an advertisement for restricted assault-style rifles from Cabela's on Paladium Dr. in Ottawa. The RCMP notes that a restricted firearm is a firearm that is not a prohibited firearm and is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner, which these Cabela's assault-style rifles claim they do in this Ottawa Citizen distributed ad. Given that Cabela's main competitor Dick's Sporting Goods has announced the ending of sales of these weapons and that multiple U.S. retailers, banks, insurance companies and airlines have announced the severing of their relations with the National Rifle Association, it is surprising that the Citizen has chosen to promote the sale of these restricted weapons which are clearly not the hunting rifles I grew up with in northwestern Ontario.
