About the author

In the fall of 2013, Citizens Academy offered a first Civics Boot Camp in English over the course of five weeks. The first three sessions were devoted to municipal governance, budgeting and land use planning. The fourth session was a practicum, where small groups planned civic action and make their pitch to a panel of community leaders who provided feedback on the plans. Each weekly session involved about 40 participants and were led by a professional facilitator. They began with a light supper, followed by three hours of interaction in small groups and in plenary. Participants were encouraged to continue conversations online between sessions, to share ideas and pursue questions. In the last two weeks, they worked in small groups on a presentation of their plans for civic action.

City Makers: You are invited to a citizen chat

September 27, 2014

October 1st. You're Invited!
R.S.V.P.

Cynicism about politics can be disheartening. Cities are complex. We face many challenges including poverty, the need for innovation, and improving sustainability. And yet, citizenry is alive at the grassroots level. People are interested in making change, re-shaping democracy, and working together to shape our future.

Local government matters a lot. And so do you and your ideas.

It's time for a new conversation about what kind of city we want to live in and what what kind of actions will move us in that direction.

Join other passionate, caring, and creative citizens like yourself to exchange ideas and think big for Ottawa in the @1125 innovation lab. Everyone is welcome. What we come up with will feed into a broader document which will be shared with the city as a reflection of citizen priorities and ideas. Some knowledgeable city influencers and experts will be on hand to share how city priorities are set and how you can influence them.

The Conversation begins at 5:30pm
Guest Speakers share insights at 6:30pm
The Conversation continues at 7:30pm

Light refreshments will be served. Your donations will help to offset the costs.
This event has been inspired by our Citizen Chats toolkit - download it here for free.
