Hour 1 of Ottawa Now for Thurs. April 11th, 2024

April 11, 2024
A bill that would have allowed Parliamentarians to opt out of swearing an Oath of Allegiance to King Charles was killed by a group of cross-partisan MPs. Dating back to the 1867 Constitution, MPs and Senators must affirm their oath to ‘bear true allegiance’ to the British Monarch before taking their seats after an election. They can’t sit in office if they refuse to do so. Should people who hold office swear this oath in 2024? We open the debate floor in Hour 1. Plus, we’re getting an LRT update this afternoon, as progress on Stage Two construction appears to be slow and steady.
